Research data: the major part of Lithuanians perform simple car maintenance by themselves.
A research, hold upon “Lesta” (Lithuanian Company that produces transport exploitation liquids) initiative has revealed that the major part (89 per cent) of citizens wash their cars and change cleaning and cooling liquids by themselves. Otherwise, chemical cleaning, polishing and waxing of vehicle’s body, also the general check are left for specialists (78%). Here are three tips that Živilė Dumčiuvienė, a Technologist of the Company, offers in order to maintain your car in an efficient and health/environment friendly way.
“Firstly, wear gloves and follow instructions on the label when using cleaning agents. Keep in mind that you use chemicals, so be responsible. A thin layer of our skin protects us from a harmful environmental impact, like armor. Should a cleaning agent be used irresponsibly, the mentioned layer is washed away and could restores in period up to 2 days,”- Ž. Dumčiuvienė warns.
She pays attention that a few like to wash their car during their leisure time near water pools in summer. Remember, it is strictly forbidden! Washing your car in a forbidden place leads to penalties and induces a great danger for the environment as washed chemicals are absorbed by surface ground and could reach underground waters or wells.
“Cleaners have different intended functions and differ in terms of its components. Duly use of an agent will prevent from damages, such as a damaged painting coat or a sediment layer of a car’s surface, the latter will stay shining for a longer time,”-the specialist says.
She marks one the most frequent case when window cleaning liquid is changed with a dish washer. The Technologist underlines that seasonal window cleaning liquids are adopted for an efficient elimination of particular season dirt, for example, the dust, insects and pollen in summer. Should a cleaner be changed by a dish washer, a risk of both: system corruption and safety appears, as washers contain different substances that are deposited on a windscreen and form a mat coat, also decrease visibility.
„Dish washer is intended to dissolve and wash away fats, but its active components don‘t clean the dirt of summer roads: oil pollution, residual parts of insects or pollen. Using a dish washer the common practice to dilute it with water from water-tap; the former is hard and contains Ca, Mg and other free ions. After some time Ion exchange reactions are indispensible within the mix. That leads to accumulation of sediments on glass and reservoir, that could later obstruct the sprayers and damage a pomp“, - Ž. Dumčiuvienė states.
The Technologist underlines that reactions begin only after some time under an appropriate temperature so after mixing dish washer with water sediments don’t appear immediately. She warns to use the products only upon its indented purpose and advises to choose high-quality goods.
As the specialist puts it, window cleaning liquid of a low quality could be one of reasons why car’s cleaners “peep“.
In case you use a concentrated window cleaning liquid, we advise to dilute it with distilled water in order to avoid salt sediments on pane.
Drivers who change cooling liquid by themselves should dispose its waste responsibly as even 52 per cent of its content amount for ethylene glycol – extremely dangerous if swallowed, harmful in case of skin contact or inhalation.
“Its sweetish aroma and taste attracts animals and children, so do not leave or pour the liquid irresponsibly. Keep in a well ventilated safe place, out of reach of children or animals, far from heating systems as vapor of a heated liquid is toxic, “- underlines the Technician.
Survey on car maintenance was presented by survey agency “Omnicom Media Group“ in May, 2012 upon “Lesta” request.
